As if there was any doubt about it. She's tall, she's blond, she's I-want-to-die gorgeous, she's rich, and she's my friend. She's Melissa, and she's got it all, including the cutest guy in school. Like I said, everyone just knew she'd be voted Prom Queen, so you wonder why anybody else bothered running. Well, I'm thrilled and just that proud of her.
Of course, not everyone feels like I do. Some of the girls in this school talk about her behind her back. I really believe they're jealous of her popularity and style. Gosh whiskers! You'd think it was a curse of some kind to have so much of everything, the way they go on. They should be ashamed of themselves. Yesterday, I couldn't help overhear Naomi and Tisha bad-mouthing the way Melissa dresses for school. As if there's something improper about being well groomed and elegant. It's true she has cashmere sweaters galore and designer labels on all her clothes and her shoes are Italian, and handmade. I think she looks like a lady.

     Back in November, at mid-term, there was mean talk about Melissa. She'd just split up with Brent, a college student who used to drive her everywhere in his father's Mercedes. People said horrible things about why he stopped dating her - as if a person like Melissa would behave so irresponsibly! She missed school for a few days, and when she came back she seemed down somehow, but she never talked to me about the break-up. I think he broke her heart.
     Last week, as part of our English final, Mr. Andrews gave us an essay to write on William Blake, the poet. You know, no one believes me when I tell them I truly want to be an English teacher just like Mr. Andrews. His vocabulary is awesome. When he read to us from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, I shivered just to feel what two people, really in love, can share. It's my favourite play. Anyway, Melissa phoned me in a panic saying she really didn't understand Blake's ideas. "Help me, Rhonda," she said. And I did. I honestly think I helped her get what he meant in Songs of Innocence. She's my friend.
     Yesterday, Melissa phoned after supper, to say that Lance had asked her to the Prom. I'm the only one who knows. I'm thrilled for her. And what's really funny is that Lance's younger brother Arthur has asked me! I only hope he can dance.
